It's a guy who acts on his impulses. He seemingly no longer has anything to lose and does whatever he seems morally justified vs staying within the law as most of us would.
For instance he gets stuck in traffic for hours only to find the construction workers sitting around. So he takes out an anti tank rocket launcher and fires it at their equipment. I think most of us having been stuck in traffic only to see the "workers" all sitting around on their phones as one guy actually works have been this upset, but we also fear jail and have a lot more to lose than gain by confronting the BS. This guy loses it and confronts anything that he deems wrong.

I'd say it was even more relevant, actually. The thing about this movie is, as much as you really, really want to sypathize with D-Fens, he IS the bad guy.
I don't think it's as cut and dry as that.
There are bad people who do good things and good people who do bad things. There were plenty of people he took out in this movie that most of us would label as bad, including gang members and neo Nazis.
When a person goes insane, we tend to blame them rather than look at what caused them to snap. There's an underlying problem(s) with our society that this movie deeply hints at.

The underlying message of this movie was the failure/collapse of the 1950s style American Dream, alienation, and disconnection. If this was made in 2025, you could make some argument about a decline in mental health, male toxicity, etc. But it wasn't.
Likewise, Fight Club (similar tackling of themes) was about consumerism and the lack of male father figures. Not something that glorified violence and rebellion (although it unintentionally did).
American Beauty was also similar, featuring a criticism of the search for the shiny suburban life and the suffering associated with doing so, as opposed to chasing the life you want.
These are two hour Hollywood movies. There are only so many layers you can stack in that time frame. If you got something else out of them, great. Art is meant to be independently interpreted. But those meanings came from Ebbe Roe Smith (Falling Down), Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) and Alan Ball (American Beauty) when interviewed
I wish that they would make more of these types of movies. All three are better than the typical three act superhero movie they crank out today, where act one explains the characters, act two explains some evil plot, and act three has a battle scene that goes on too long. But where's the money in that?

Honestly, that guy is the what the US population has become. When your goal as a nation and government is to screw over everyone to the benefit of the rich, you get that.
Yes, but Americans are as divided as ever, so even if a lot of Americans feel this way, it's all in different directions.
There are people doing actual harm to the country, and then there's people saying "mean" things, and Americans struggle to tell the difference.

The older I get, the more I can sympathize with this guy.
Awesome movie!
I sympathized with him as a kid. You start learning the crummy aspects of life and social order when you're getting bullied for having asthma haha. Most people don't get it until they're middle aged and burned out.
Police arrested a woman for praying near an abortion clinic in the UK.
They also went to a mans home and told him to take down the British flag he had put up because a neighbor complained that they were offended by it.
So yeah, he's right when he says it could be a lot worse.

It could always get worse, until we're dead. That doesn't mean what is currently happening isn't bad.

Sadly, that one is not currently on sale, or I'd say to get both and make it an extraordinary night!
