yeah, I've seen a good amount of people purchase these, probably because they don't pay for the premium connectivity and run apple maps / Google maps along with the Tesla Infotainment unit. plus, I'm pretty sure the wireless chargers are slow charging and don't have fans for fast wireless charging

They charge at a max of 15w, just like this charger. And you don't need premium connectivity to use the gps and maps the car comes with

Some people prefer Google maps / Apple maps. Plus, since I use Bluetooth, you'd need to pick up the phone to change songs.

from google:

Tesla's 15W wireless charging can indeed cause phones to overheat, and this is a common issue reported by Tesla owners. The heat generated is due to the inherent inefficiency of wireless charging and the lack of active cooling in Tesla's charging pads. While the phone's internal systems will prevent it from exceeding its designed operating temperature, the heat can still be uncomfortable and slow down charging.

They use Google Maps at it's core. Any time I've compared to Google Maps, it's been literally the same. And you just use the scroll wheel to change songs, you don't need to pick it up.

Dude, whatever man. If I'm changing artists on something like Plex, I need to look at the phone. Here's also on the 15w charger overheating people's phones: >Tesla's 15W wireless charging can indeed cause phones to overheat, and this is a common issue reported by Tesla owners. Because other people's uses are different than yours. it's not just you. it is the AI answer after the many reddit posts. I'd know it overheats my wife's Samsung phone.

Right, I use my phone for audiobooks. This will be perfect for that.

New ones do.... but Tesla didn't add it until mid-2020 (though you can add it to look similar to the factory one with various aftermarket kits)- at that point the Y had been on sale for a bit over a year, and the 3 had been on sale for about 3 years.

FWIW Tesla supports Audible in the native OS so you could use the built-in media controls with no need for phone if that's your audiobook source.... Alternatively you can put the audiobooks on a USB stick and play it using the native USB media player (though they'd need to be in MP3 or AAC or something, M4B converts easily enough)

iphone and android both use Qi standard- so the charging part should work fine.

The issue is the charging pads are magnetic, specifically to use with the magsafe attach capability of Iphone 12 and later phones-- so you'd have issues getting the phone to stay on the charger unless you're adding a 3rd party magsafe case or something

the problem is quite literally teslas phone chargers are absolute trash. you can glue a magsafe puck over the built in chargers and those will actually work. teslas built in will cook your phone and barely charge it -- after an hour your phone will be hot af and maybe 2-3% higher than you started. there is nothing inherent about this.

you will damage your phone using the built in chargers. that said, i am not endorsing this product. just saying all these speculative use discussion is irrelevant
