What is a good weight for +40L backpack that fits in a European Pane overhead? I'm traveling to Europe for the first time this Fall and I want to maximize space.

Try the 40L Patagonia black hole duffel bag. It comes with backpack straps.

I've been using the REI Ruckpack 40 which is a little over 2.5 pounds for international travel. My daily bag is a Ruckpack 30 which is sub-2LB, but that gets closer to personal item territory for most airlines.

I would say 2-3 lbs. Google "one bag Google drive" for options. If you have higher budget, I would recommend ULA Camino.

It really depends. For a travel bag 4lbs is not unusual. Peak bags of similar size are in this range and are great for travel where you don't want to check a bag, and do some very mild walking with the bag.

Contrast to backpacking across Europe with a tent in tow, then you probably want a backpacking pack which will be lighter.

They both have their place and for scenario 1, I've done fine with 4+ lb bags on many occasions.
