Agreed, impossible to anchor these into studs on both sides

For less than $2 a shelf, hard to complain but would love them to be 18 or 20 with holes drilled 16" apart. Might still pick these up and just throw one side in a stud. Honestly do not need it and does not always work out that way with where you want it on the wall. I am sure my daughter would love to put some lego on her walls.

Despite my complaining, that's exactly my usage as I need to go vertical for all the Legos and/or paintings....

Stud install is great as you dont need the wall anchors and in other cases where you need to hold weight which I woudlnt do with these. I've started to use the butterfly brackets for things that need to hold weight or have a pull (Towel rods for example) and are more of a permanent installation (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9Q8S...in_title_2). I've always had the damm towel rod bars pull off the wall but since I've put these on I am doing great after a remodel unless your kid hangs on it!

Engineered wood, likely MDF, with a walnut veneer. Unsurprising, you're not getting solid walnut for this price.

"Engineered wood". They did it again! Another new name for particle board.

It's not new at all.. it's a term that's been used in flooring for decades. Typically describes a product that is a hardwood veneer over dimensionally stable wood or wood products (i.e. plywood of another wood species , or particleboard)

I don't know. 3.5" seems a little small. I guess minifigs without Lego builds could fit. At about 3 studs per inch, your Lego build would have to be less than 7 studs to fit inside the smaller shelf.
Maybe these can be mounted upside down to gain an extra inch?

Particle board? That's probably being generous. I'd imagine it's more like to be sawdust and wood glue.

...but that's pretty much exactly what particleboard is.

You can buy real pine wood for $1 linear foot and cut them to ant size you want, and stain it to look like walnut wood. Use pocket holes for floating shelf, youtube it

Don't have a lot of experience with the drywall anchor type -- but have looked into floating shelves before -- those with experience, are the type with the hidden brackets a better overall choice for strength?

Example:

One should always have an approximate value for their time, like $/Hr.

You can do things "for love" , but otherwise, this method keeps people rational, and sane.
