This is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone using the old Blink for the 1:1 aspect ratio and the ability for multiple people to see the camera at the same time without the dreaded "Camera is busy" error. It's also a better build quality and finally shows doorbell video automatically on Echo Shows - used to only do audio announcements unless you created a custom routine.

Also traded in old Blink Doorbell which is currently installed for 20% off and $10 gift card which is applied at checkout. Ordered with new sync module since it's only 5 bucks extra. I think it should be a worthy upgrade for ~$23

Just did the same. Got my Blink doorbell cam with Sync module in Feb. 2004 for $35.Guessing the new sync module just replaces my current one and works with my Blink camera?

I wished they'd made it powered off the existing doorbell wiring, instead of still requiring batteries.

Edit: Looks like I have to keep my current Sync 2 module for free local storage.

New Sync module doesn't support local storage, but you can buy/reuse the old one with usb port.

That's disappointing. Only reason I switched to Blink was for free local storage.Guess I'll keep using my current Sync 2 module.

I dont think the new module offers any additional or better functionality.

Interesting, sounds like they just removed the local storage option to force you into a subscription. That's the reason I left Ring.

I've always been disappointed that Blink doorbells don't utilize the doorbell power instead of burning through lithium batteries.

I recently upgraded. I think the sub is worth it for the faster load times on videos due to cloud storage and the on-device ML-based person detection. I was able to increase my detection area and lower the number of false alerts for trucks driving by.

The Core XR module that comes with the new cams supports microSD storage. So if you're looking for a doorbell and a couple cams, that package is a better deal than this doorbell with the crappy sub only module.

They are. Well, somewhat. The battery life is extended compared to not hard-wiring the doorbell. I doubt your average doorbell transformer has enough output to constantly power a motion detection camera by itself.

My old Ring wired doorbell camera worked fine off the transformer. I think some of them use a rechargeable battery that charges from the transformer, which is what this newest blink model should have done.

You don't strictly need to use lithium batteries. As an experiment, I've been running Eneloops in my garage doorbell since sometime in May. The doorbell immediately gives a low-battery warning in the app because the combined voltage is only 2.4V even when fresh but the doorbell will continue to work for months. That doorbell usually records 5-6 motion events a day.

Oh, they have more than enough power. Even the old the cameras will function for more than 6 months on ~9Wh of power (two 1.5V lithium AAs). Most doorbells I've seen are 24 or 30v and, without tripping the doorbell relays, you can siphon off tens of milliamps. Even if you de-rate to 12v and 1 mA, and allow for a 50% power factor on charging and discharging a small supercap or lithium rechargeable, you can draw 9Wh a *day*.

It would, of course, require some power storage and charging management circuitry, which could run in the the tens of cents per unit. It's much easier to just make people buy disposable batteries. I haven't tried rechargables in the doorbell, but the self contained Blinck Outdoor units will last maybe a week or two on eleloops in my experience. The benefit of the lithium single-use is that their life is incredible long when draws are below a mA, or for short bursts. We used to put them in the (film) Nikons, because they would last forever and gave a little faster FPS on the motor drives.

The Energizer lithium batteries also have a much wider operating temperature range and cold/hot weather performance than NiMH batteries. I would trust NiMH in decorative solar lighting, not a security camera.
