I wished they'd made it powered off the existing doorbell wiring, instead of still requiring batteries.
Edit: Looks like I have to keep my current Sync 2 module for free local storage.

The Core XR module that comes with the new cams supports microSD storage. So if you're looking for a doorbell and a couple cams, that package is a better deal than this doorbell with the crappy sub only module.
They are. Well, somewhat. The battery life is extended compared to not hard-wiring the doorbell. I doubt your average doorbell transformer has enough output to constantly power a motion detection camera by itself.
It would, of course, require some power storage and charging management circuitry, which could run in the the tens of cents per unit. It's much easier to just make people buy disposable batteries. I haven't tried rechargables in the doorbell, but the self contained Blinck Outdoor units will last maybe a week or two on eleloops in my experience. The benefit of the lithium single-use is that their life is incredible long when draws are below a mA, or for short bursts. We used to put them in the (film) Nikons, because they would last forever and gave a little faster FPS on the motor drives.

The Energizer lithium batteries also have a much wider operating temperature range and cold/hot weather performance than NiMH batteries. I would trust NiMH in decorative solar lighting, not a security camera.
