CHECK THE SERIAL NUMBER IN STORE BEFORE PURCHASING!
I purchased two 12,000 BTU units for $250 each yesterday at Costco. To play it safe, I used my cell phone to check the model and serial number at the Midea Recall website https://mideaurecall.expertinquiry.com/?lang=en . The model number is MAW12AV1QWT-C and it appears on the Recall List, HOWEVER, if you also input the serial number located on the outside of the box, you'll get specifics on that unit. The two units I purchased state they are "reworked". They have the plugs on the bottom of the units. BUT BE CAREFUL! Two of the five boxes I checked came back as still being recalled! I pointed this out to a sales rep. He replied that they may be units that customers returned to the store and were placed on the floor among the units recently delivered. I asked him to point out to the manager that Costco is selling units that are on the recall list. Yeah, I'm sure he got right on that. Caveat emptor. CHECK THE SERIAL NUMBER BEFORE PURCHASE.

12k Midea at my local Costco is $249.99 on clearance - there were over a dozen available. Would check your local Costco to see if there is still inventory esp. at that price - if you need a larger AC

Is it better than traditional window AC?

How do you winterize it?

I would have been tempted to flip them for profit. Some people have reported getting $480 for recall for three month old 12!000 btu.
Can confirm. Paid $289 from HD for ours and we are getting a $480 GC back.

Better? Debatable... but kinda yes...

Winterize? Take it out of the window and stash it in the garage or basement until spring.

I have 2 of these and had 2 of their portable ones. Reliability has not been good from my own personal experience. One of my portable never cooled from the beginning returned that one pretty quick. My 12k btu U failed after 2 summers. It cools only like 30% of what it used to do when I first got it. It's basically just a fan now instead of an AC. My 8k U works but it sometimes makes noise. Hopefully it keeps going but yeah not sure I'd go with Midea again unless there's excellent return policy. Out of 4 midea ACs im literally 2/4 in a short amount of time.

Someone on Reddit suggested that this is due to a design issue with the built-in temperature sensor, which can cause a discrepancy between the actual ambient temperature and the ambient temperature. The solution is to use the remote's built-in temperature sensor; you can Google it for details. I have a 12000 model, and it's truly quiet, energy-efficient, and I haven't had any mold issues so far. When using it, turn off eco mode and, after stopping cooling, keep the fan running for at least half an hour to evaporate any remaining moisture.

I been doing this take it out of window to garage. Each time I have to screw the thing on the wood, it is taking its toll.

I bought my 8k 2-3 months ago. It came with the new drain plugs. I installed mine at a slight tilt to drain. You can literally open the front and remove the filter and can see if the water is draining. Maybe I'll regret this later, but it seems to operate like all the window units for the last 3-4 decades. If you see water marks on your sill or the wall, there's a problem. Check your filter once a month, and look out to see if water is draining. You'll see any problems.
Anyways, I work rotating shift and a lot of nights... so I sleep during the day. I used to have to run my 4 ton unit all day just to cool my bedroom so I could sleep. This thing is a game changer. We also use it to cool our room prior to bedtime since we have 4 billion degree dogs that sleep in our bed.
My wife and I are super happy with this. We also used the military discount on HD and the NEX/EXCHANGE checkout for no tax. Love Costco, but what a pain in the D to check locations for stock.

i appreciate that but i did read that as well and have tried using the remote. unfortunately it didn't fix it for me. the cooling has dramatically fallen off. as mentioned earlier it's basically like a fan now more than an AC unit.

Buy every recalled unit you can get your hands on. Midea is sending owners a check for nearly twice what you paid and you get to keep the unit. The DIY mod to eliminate the problem takes about 30 minutes.

Some of it, like the attachment require the screw to drill to your wood frame. I keep unscrew it every time when I winterized. The hole are getting bigger every year.
