ORICO products appear as if they don't care about thermal management nor reliability. Their hard drive NAS/DAS have fans but airflow is entirely blocked by the PCB. Their hard drive docks are either hot boxes like this one or wrap around the drive to let them bake to death. ORICO moves a ton of units (disposable etrash) through pricing and pretty design, but don't ever buy their products if you care about reliability and longevity.

Professional engineering brands that care about proper implementation include Plugable, OWC, Vantec, UGreen, in that order. They make mistakes sometimes but most of their stuff are solid. Really any brand is better that ORICO. Buy Sabrent or UGreen if you need cheap stuff.

For example, Sabrent has aluminum enclosure for $10. It's twice as expensive as this deal, yes, but it's an actual product meant to keep your hard drive from crashing and disconnecting as you write and read data from it and heat up the drive.

It could be a lack of power issue. I am planning to use it with a powered usb 3.0 hub.

I have one of these from a previous deal, and it works fine for my uses, which is backups of my rom collection. It's no frills, the case does collect fingerprints, but I ended up putting stickers on it.

Thanks! I had a few of them but I lost track of them. I just ordered one as I have 2.5 " ssd sitting around.
There was a time when that hard drive cable alone costed more than $5.

I have one and I've only ever used it on my power hub so that might be a case, because it's worked perfectly for me

You can update the controller firmware. However orico doesn't provide it. So it takes a bit of googling.

Your reasoning just saved me an impulse buy that could l've cost data.

Drill holes in this external case, remove the SSD chipset from the 2.5" manufacturer casing and install the bare chipset in this - it'll be cooler, look awesome, and everything will be fine.

Haha

I had the same experience with the usb c version of this. It couldn't even format a older SSD that worked in several other cheap enclosures without issue. If you value your time and data skip this

ORICO = Trash
Old ORICO products were good. However, in recent years, ORICO has sacrificed quality to reduce production costs. The result is cheap-looking designs, lower quality, and various issues. In the past, they used to use a lot of aluminum shells, but nowadays, they opt for cheap plastic shells. Especially when transferring or copying data, it's common to lose files or experience file corruption, even powered USB hubs.

I have used this model for years without issue. A couple years it was used weekly in the field and kept in a workbag. I did always unplug the cable, mostly. Just used it yesterday to make a bootable USB. I'm getting another.
