Pockets are nice… but for soccer shorts pockets are also a place for getting a finger snagged. No pockets, less likely to snag!
All of the Adidas soccer shorts I've purchased in the last year with pockets also have zippers for those pockets so I don't really worry about that.
Apparently I haven't purchased new soccer shorts in a while. I'll be on the lookout for pocket versions!
Here's an example of one I bought a few months ago, description does mention "zippered pockets" so I'm guessing they added these to the 2025 versions of the tiro. https://www.adidas.com/us/tiro-25...I6491.html

I couldn't wear shorts with pockets while playing soccer at school and in competitive rec leagues, so I got used to that and wore them for all other sports as well. I prefer them because 1) they often have better sweat-wicking fabrics/designs because they're made for on-field use and 2) I don't have the extra pocket fabric on my thighs trapping air/sweat and potentially bunching up.
Of course, I have other shorts with pockets for wearing around town or going to the gym, and people who want the same should look for training or lifestyle shorts, not these. But if you're getting them to actually play sports, I recommend at least trying a pair without pockets. They're great.
