This stuff kills insects like ants and bees. I thought it just was supposed to scare them away.

Deet can deter bees, but it does not kill them. It works by confusing their receptors, making it difficult for bees to detect the human body. While it can provide some protection against bees, it is not a poison and should not be used as a "bee chase" method. Instead, it is recommended to use other repellents that are safe for bees, such as natural oils like peppermint or citronella
