I was saving up for a Fluke meter and waiting for quite a while for one to go on sale, but ended up buying 2 KAIWEETS meters (1 clamp style and 1 feature rich multimeter) for around $100 total. I'm not an electrician by trade, and after using these other 2 meters a fair bit, I'm not sure I can justify the Fluke price tag. Is a Fluke meter really 3 times better and will it last 3 times longer than a mid range meter? I have $10 meters that I've owned for 25 years still ticking...
Anyone know if this meter will measure start up surge, or in-rush I think they call it? I'm no electrician but discovered my solar charger was limited to 4000w surge but my portable AC unit must surge over that because it cause the solar charger to cut out. I was trying to figure out exactly how much this portable AC surges, because the info isn't available anywhere I can find. Thanks!

look into getting a soft-start for your AC. I'm willing to bet your solar system has a recommendation/requirement that a soft-start is needed.
soft-starts reported to help extend life of AC unit also.

The 17B is the China made Fluke, but still good. For those complaining about the price, this is the cheapest Fluke made. Maybe this item is not for you. I have several in my toolbox, but none of the Chinese made ones. I have field, bench and true RMS Fluke meters as well as amp clamps.
The good thing about this MM is it measures amps if you know how to measure amps correctly without blowing the amp fuse. Also has the ability to read temperature but will need an additional lead to use that function.
edit, nevermind I see the temp lead in the picture, this is a good deal. They charge $169 for this on Flukes site.

I worked as a design engineer for a world leading US company building handhelt test equipment. My simple recommendation is: This Fluke is not worth it. If you work full time in production or testing, and have a limited set of tests you need to do, Fluke might be the right one, but in that case, not this one. If you are a homeowner and have electric hobbies, dont buy this. Instead you can find a solid unit that will work for life with a lot better specifications. Look for these features:
AC/DC current clamp. This might be the most important feature to quickly check a circuit without screwing things apart. DC is great for computers and solar etc.
Proximity high voltage warning. Just holt the nose of the meter near an outlet or circuit, and get a warning if it is powered up.
Good Resolution. The fluke is only 4000
True RMS. the Fluke 17B+ is a capable and reliable meter for many basic electrical tasks, it is not suitable for accurately diagnosing or troubleshooting circuits with non-linear loads. For that type of work, you would need a True RMS multimeter
I purchased from Home Depot, as they have the same price and offer the 10% Military discount as well.Made it $112.04.This was a no brainer purchase for a nice meter to keep in the tool box.Hurry, only 33 more left in stock.

Field technicians don't care about fancy features like proximity high voltage warnings or super high resolution.
What really matters in the field is true RMS, an AC/DC clamp, and the ability to perform insulation resistance (megger) tests. Homeowners, on the other hand, can usually get by with a $5 meter for most of their needs.
That said, I started out using a basic Fluke clamp meter and multimeter. Even today, I can diagnose about 90% of problems with a simple meter, it just takes a little more time.
For the past 10 years, I've been using a Fluke 1587 and it's never let me down. Of course, it also costs about ten times as much as the budget meters on the market.

if you are using this for work you aren't getting a 17b.

Very well built - and I'm going to buy another one.

You can get all this in a decent meter for about $30. For example https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075Z1GH5L. And many others.Sign up for a Slickdeals account to remove this ad.
