I would argue the only reason you would want to upgrade is if they no longer provide security updates. I mean for most people you can use a 10 year old version just fine.

Unless you buy through Microsoft, they are essentially all grey market keys. This version of office comes with Access and isn't even available for sale directly to consumers. It's only sold to orgs at volume pricing. It's technically called Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024. There are a few actually legit sellers, like CDW, and it sells for $500 or more per license.
But why buy thought a grey market company, since you're not getting a 100% legitimate license. Why not just go the massgravel route (not condoning this) instead? It seems people do it because it feels like it's not pirating and Microsoft doesn't shut these companies down. But I honestly don't see the point in giving money to something that isn't 100% legit.

Upgraded my old laptop with i7 4710HQ to Win 11, kept the 2007 office. I only use word, excel (personal stuff), i dont use outlook.

What other use case, average folks use who in need of this 'legit' versions?

More important to the topic at hand is the type of installation key being sold. Like others pointed out, grayware like this is common and at cheaper prices. When selling this MS code as "for Business or Pro" the vendor is seriously misrepresenting the legitamacy of the installation code as an LTS distribution is specifically for Enterprise and CANNOT be relied on for any length of time, much less "lifetime registration".

While the installation may take extra steps and still be successful, as soon as MS flags the vendor's activation server the code will no longer work.

For the typical home user

Doesn't LibreOffice or Google Suite (Docs/Sheets/Slides) work just fine?

I can understand for professional functions at work where advanced features may be needed, but for most users at home wouldn't any of the free options be more than sufficient?

What are some specific examples for typical/most home users that MS Office Professional 2024 has that the free options don't have? I'm just curious
