We don't use anything higher than MERV 8 in all of our rentals as it cause problems with low air flow and freezing. If you change your filters often it should be fine, but if you're the type that won't change them out till there's a problem I would avoid this.

Seconded. I tried 11s and it was choking our HVAC system. Dropped back to 8 and stopped having problems. Be careful if you use these higher MERV rating filters.

Especially true with these one inch filters. Less of an issue with the larger media filters
Are these the filters people put on the back of 20 inch box fans?
Yes, kind of. This is 10"x20", box fans are 20" squares. These are good to make Corsi-Rosenthal boxes, so you need four of these filters to create one. It's the half sized variant of the CR-box.

I fully agree with everything that's been mentioned about the 1-in filters that are above 8 Merv but the only thing I noticed is that when I use the 8 Merv filters the odors in the house from cooking and stuff like that stays lingers much longer than if I used a higher filter. is there any suggestions? and are there problems if you go to a 4 or a 5-in filter? pleated any suggestions are helpful. thank you

Yes, you can total your HVAC system. Don't go messing around too much unless you want to invest a decent amount of time learning, researching & running diagnostics on your own system.
If you know your way around a PCB, and multimeter, I'd say it's worth it. Otherwise, call around local HVAC contractors and ask them if they are equipped and knowledgeable on return drop upgrades, static testing, motor tuning, and filtration upgrades.
for your smelly kitchen, biggest factor is verifying that your range hood is vented directly to the outdoors. Not recirculating. Not into your HVAC duct work, not into a crawl space or cabinet.
If you don't have one, get one. In the meantime, pick up a couple HEPA filter portable air cleaners, maybe ones with the option for a carbon filter.

Yeah, protip: If you want higher MERV rating you need to use thicker filters. 1" filters with high MERV ratings put a lot of stress on your HVAC components due to pressure differences. I use MERV 13 on everything but my filters are 4-5".
