Seconded. I tried 11s and it was choking our HVAC system. Dropped back to 8 and stopped having problems. Be careful if you use these higher MERV rating filters.
I fully agree with everything that's been mentioned about the 1-in filters that are above 8 Merv but the only thing I noticed is that when I use the 8 Merv filters the odors in the house from cooking and stuff like that stays lingers much longer than if I used a higher filter. is there any suggestions? and are there problems if you go to a 4 or a 5-in filter? pleated any suggestions are helpful. thank you
If you know your way around a PCB, and multimeter, I'd say it's worth it. Otherwise, call around local HVAC contractors and ask them if they are equipped and knowledgeable on return drop upgrades, static testing, motor tuning, and filtration upgrades.
for your smelly kitchen, biggest factor is verifying that your range hood is vented directly to the outdoors. Not recirculating. Not into your HVAC duct work, not into a crawl space or cabinet.
If you don't have one, get one. In the meantime, pick up a couple HEPA filter portable air cleaners, maybe ones with the option for a carbon filter.
Godspeed!
