Apple refurb or used?

I took a chance on one of these eBay refurb deals from a similarly reputable seller (tekdeals) and the "Excellent" MacBook was new, still had screen paper, still had AppleCare+ coverage and had 1 battery cycle. I think "Excellent" means unused for these sellers.

How could one conclude that it's in new condition?
There is only 1 battery cycle on it when I opened it. It also looked brand new.

Ordered a Silver one. Arrived in bulk packaging and in NEW condition. Warranty at fist showed it would was shorter (like 6 months remaining if I recall correctly) but after running updates the warranty reflected a full year. Great laptop.
That's kind of sus. Did you try getting AppleCare on it?

Battery cicle was 1 when I got it and it says I can get applecare for it, I have 58 days left.

My previous laptop was purchased in a similar fashion and I was able to get apple care for it, no problem.

I'd like to get one for my wife, but she is going to opt for a 15" macbook Air instead.

Just received mine today (silver.) It arrived with a dead battery and the chassis and trackpad appear warped, as if the battery is swelling. The device otherwise appears to be in new condition. It does have an Apple warranty, so I am taking it to the Apple Store to be checked out.
How could one conclude that it's in new condition?
"Otherwise"

Likewise, other than the obvious battery issue with mine. 1 battery cycle, new warranty. Apple Store confirmed that the laptop's warranty was not previously activated- it's not a refurb.

Received mine today. Wow, brand new with typical apple packaging. But in a generic brown box.

Battery Charge is 0 and won't boot but plugged in. Fingers crossed on the warranty.

that's reassuring. out of curiosity, why no applecare for this one? the laptop seems expensive enough to justify it.

I have been debating this deal vs the Micro Center deal that was a 16in M4 Max w/ 48gb ram and 1tb drive for around $2900. It's really hard to justify $900 for slightly more ram and 1-gen newer M4 Max. Am I wrong about this? Help me justify spending more money.
what did you end up deciding?
Welp, it happened. I just bought the M4 Max 16in, 48gb, 1Tb model that was posted recently. This MC > BB price match deal finally got me. When MC dropped the price to $2624 but didn't have any inventory I started to watching, and at this moment their St Davids store has one in stock. BB price matched and let me choose silver without any kind of refund process for the difference.

There was no refund. This was my first purchase. Via BB chat I asked for the price match, they agreed, verified some account info, and then sent me a custom link/invoice to checkout with for the $2624 plus tax amount.
