Recently, I purchased this membership after almost 2 years without membership. when I went to get physical card at the store, the rep their started arguing that there is no 18 month rules ... and basically said I have to renew my old membership. I said flat out that I am not paying for renewal.. and they gave in eventually but it was big hassel. I am going to be careful on Costco membership in future.

I don't know about Costco, but can confirm you can do this with Sam's. My wife and I alternate each year. I currently have a membership with her added on, and when this expires, she will sign up for a new customer promo and add me on. Have been doing this for a decade.
Costco makes it tough though because to qualify, you can't have been a member for 18 months I believe.

In almost 18 years of owning warehouse club memberships, the deals are almost always on new memberships. I haven't seen any deal on existing membership.

My local Costco gave me hassles too until I showed them their own fine print. I won't be renewing in the future. I have a Sam's Club nearby and prefer them over Costco anyways.

Caution, last year, I bought a slightly different deal off Groupon, the "Costco — Costco Gold Star Membership Package + $20 Digital Costco Shop Card" and Groupon never sent me a $20 Costco.

They said they'd send an email with the $20 and they never did. On top of that, although the Costco staff honored the membership from Groupon, they seemed unhappy with this promotion. Lastly, they had to create a new membership, thus I lost my old membership.

Why pay $15 extra to get hassled? That sounds ridiculous. Sams club is a hassle free zone with ez app check out. Get away from the dark side & make sure to tell them that when you cancel, so corporate is aware that their employees need hassle free training.

is my math wrong? this is basically paying $65 to get $100 off $200. the saving is only $35.... and only if you have plans to spend $200 one something they sell.

Your math is wrong. You're getting a membership AND saving $35 off $200, as in, paying $65 in value for $165 in value, ie net saving $100 (if you're spending $200). In terms of being a money maker, if you had a $200 order it would be a $35 money maker, if you didn't care about the membership (similar to paying $165 cash for $200 cash, plus a free membership).

I like having both, when I find a good discount for Sams membership. Generally I prefer Costco over Sams even when I do have both or have to pick one mostly just because the Kirkland brand products from Costco seem to be higher quality in general.

Most definitely, assuming you find a mattress you like. Effectively free membership and $35 off a mattress (after $100 savings and $65 to cover said membership). Though you might want to wait for the model you prefer to go on sale as they do every few months or so.

Most of those compressed MF mattresses can be fit in a car other than some compact designs. Even if they have to take up the whole rear seat with front seats pulled up. Plus, once he has a membership it's unlikely he'd ONLY buy a mattress.
