What does anyone do to make these taste better? Any time I have tried the "fat free" version of refried beans, the taste is way off and I can compare it to Elmers glue. All I can figure is i'm missing something important in making/heating this.

Maybe add green chili and lime?

Add more water + chicken bouillon. Chicken broth if you have it. I make homemade refried beans without fat all the time. Fat isn't necessary at all, but you'll need more liquid to thin it out. Never bought premade since dried pinto beans are 80c/lb and more than double in weight when soaked but $1/can is not too bad of a price for convenience.

A boat load of taco bell sauce packets. Maybe like 20 per can. Some sauteed onion, garlic, cumin, chipotle pepper, oregano.. And at this point I just soak dry beans, pressure cook it, and make a batch of my own beans. lol
