as a big time polaroid and Instax photographer, avoid this camera. most frustrating and expensive mistake I've made in a long time. film cost is extremely high but this camera delivers such terrible results consistently

What would you suggest as a better alternative?

I don't think there's a current, "good", polaroid camera out there. I've tried all of the OneStep+ and PolaroidNow and Polaroid Go cameras and they've all been big letdowns. Part of it is the film, but the big thing is that these cameras just meter and expose so poorly, and at $2.50/shot, it's a pricey process. personally the only polaroid I can recommend is if you have an older SX70 and can use that polaroid SX70 film (or a filter and 600 film). if you're looking to just buy a new camera, my recommendation is Instax. film is much better developed and more stable (and cheap). I'd just avoid the cheap line (mini8, mini9, Mini SE). they come in both analog, digital (so it essentially develops/prints onto actual film) and some "toy camera" models that give a really vintage/retro/film like look (like the lomo instant automat) depending what you're going for. film is much cheaper and results will be much better. unfortunately, polaroid now is not the same as it was.. they're trying to get back there, but focusing more on releasing crappy products than actually putting out decent ones (both camera and film), relying on nostalgia to keep their sales up.

which instax would you recomend
It'd definitely not be budget, but if you're really wanting a proper Instax camera, look into the instant cameras by Mint that use the Instax format. They are quite pricy (TL70 and the RF70), but have adjustable focus and shutter speed and exposure. Alternatively, if you just want a clear picture in the Instax format, I have both the Instax mini and Instax wide printers. I shoot on portrait mode on my Google Pixel, which does a nice computational blur, and print out just beautiful images on Instax format... although purists would argue it's technically printing on film.
