Still the "gateway drug" to home automation. 🙂 Automate porch lights for on-at-dusk off-at-whatever. Integrate with a doorbell cam to have motion events turn on the porch lights overnight. This is how it starts...

So true! Why do these go on sale frequently, but not the double pole/3-way? It's holding back more of my automation!

So true! Why do these go on sale frequently, but not the double pole/3-way? It's holding back more of my automation!
While TP-Link calls this a "kit", implying that both switches are required in a 3 way switching situation, they can in fact be used individually in a 3 way switching situation. Only one of the switches needs to be "smart", and the existing "dumb" 3 way switch can be left in place. Just make sure to replace the 3 way switch that has "line in" power coming in to it.

So this "kit" can be used to smarten up TWO 3-way circuits, so the effective price of the 3-way smart switch is $13.60, very reasonable. HTH.

(Note that this is only for 3 way on/offs, if you need 3 way dimming, both switches have to be replaced)
