Never again. I got the 500 GB version a year back and it literally lasted a little over a year, and then one day it just broke.

Could've been that 24H2 update that was bricking SSDs for a while not that long ago

This.
Maybe.
JayZTwoCents in YT added SN5000 as one of the affected SSDs, not just those with Phison controllers.

Anyone know who makes the SSDs? I know WD is just a licensed brand now.

Per google (but I already knew this)

SanDisk now makes WD-branded SSDs after the companies separated, with SanDisk officially taking over the Western Digital SSD division. While the brands have separated, SSD production is expected to continue with minimal disruption, and all related teams, technology, and manufacturing processes will now operate under the SanDisk name. This means future SSDs previously sold under the Western Digital brand will now be branded as SanDisk
