No ATSC 3.0 👎🏻
ATSC 3.0 is 4k resolution and that is 16 times more resolution than 720p OTA. It will eat up a ton of storage. It doesn't make sense. 4k is way too demanding in recording. With 720p OTA broadcasting, one can record far more TV shows. A bluray disk is like 1080p and that used like 50GB. Imagine 4k storage? Think of 4k recording a phone. With 4k, it is 4x more pixels than 1080p.
Cons?
Higher demands: Requires more processing power, bandwidth, and storage space than 720p content.
Overkill on small screens: The added detail may not be perceptible on a 720p display, and 4K content will be downscaled, potentially causing some clarity loss.
Are there any 4k channels?
- Food Network Channel
- Disney
- FX
- Tastemade
If anyone knows of any alternatives, or if they know if watching these are possible with Tablo, let me know!

I moved to a different house and now there's ATSC 3.0. I am able to get NextGen reception directly by connecting an indoor antenna. So, my tablo is not being used anymore.
These big mergers are really going to pollute the last of the systems that were kept open, by government enforcement. We gave up the idea of secure, end to end phone calls that required a court to get a wire tap, versus Zuck listening in on whatever the hell he wants to.
1) I miss my Slingbox, it let me get what I wanted anywhere without workarounds
2) I set up and still run a MythTV on my Fedora server during the pandemic. Its powerful, it's for tinkerers, no way it will work as a plug it in and "it just works". It's got that open source vibe, not like Home Assistant, which is super polished stuff, but the old school quirky stuff. But I love it, got some old Hauppage and Pinnacle tuners working on it pulled from old systems, fun stuff.
BUT... it doesnt have a good front end for Roku, my go to platform. I just loaded up and will try the Google TV front end and compare it to the $66 Tablo refurb I just ordered (Walmart, agree with all on the return policy). Its hard to compare a heavy duty old Xeon Thinksever 140 with 12TB mirrored drives running Fedora, to a plug and play thing that sounds like it cooks itself sometimes, but for $70 why not? I've always found that things don't tend to be either-or, but rather the best tool for the job, having choices.
I was doing this with the satellite station feeds back in the day, and the first HD signals that were pre beta. Where you could hear Al Michaels humming during commercial breaks, while they showed "We'll Be Right Back" Great stuff.
But this ATSC 3 sounds like complete hot garbage, There's tons of stations in DC area that have it, and no thanks, I'll wait that one out.
PS: This is turning out to be a pretty cool thread BTW, love this stuff!
