The issue with the XM5s breaking seems to be related to people who got manufacturing runs after the first batch. There are many people who bought at launch and still have perfectly fine hinges, but from what I can see over on reddit, people who bought XM5s after the first year are the ones that have had their hinges break very easily, including those who really take care of their stuff. I have a family member that has the XM5s from launch that do not take care of anything, just throwing them into their bags loose when travelling and have ZERO problems, but then someone else in the household is the complete opposite to the point of obsessively taking care of things, always using the case etc.. and their hinge broke on one side (theirs was purchased maybe 1.5 years after launch?) Sony refuses to acknowledge warranty repair/replacement on broken hinges. The XM6 seems to have taken the broken hinge issues of the 5s to heart given they are now now completely plastic, however it is still too soon to tell how they will hold up over time since they only came out somewhat recently.

XM5 is prob the only model id avoid. Imho the XM6 is a much greater upgrade because it has a ton more feature and folds, and has much stronger hinges. XM5 is the generation that had tons of issues w/ hinge failures. If you have XM3/XM4 you prob dont need to get this. You can just go straight to xm6 or wait it out until XM6s are on big discount later in the year.

TBH I have no idea what model year/serial number is the safe zone with these if there is such a thing. But for $150 and 2 yr Allstate, I'd finally bite. Otherwise gotta hope and pray for a $299 BF or Xmas deal on the 1006. Wishingful thinking lol

To my ear they sound slightly better than the XM4s, and almost the same as the XM6. So many people complain about the hinge breaking on reddit, it must be a known issue that Sony doesn't acknowledge. I haven't had mine break yet, but I am sure the plastic will get brittle over time.

only ever had one problem with any of my ref Sony headphones from them and it was covered under the extended warranty easily. I am using both XM5's still (WH and WF).

Secondipity just had the xm6 refefurbished for 270. I got them and they were flawless and unused. Much better than my old xm3z

I have multiple XM4's because of Slickdeals. If I needed now I would buy these in heartbeat but my XM4's are money. I use them for music and for Teams meetings with no problems.

I got the regular Bose QC and they broke internally within a month. Took them on a flight and the speakers went crazy staticy, almost unwearable. Returned them to Costco (can return them whenever you want there) and got Sony XM4. Wore them on a flight and they were amazing.
