TBH I have no idea what model year/serial number is the safe zone with these if there is such a thing. But for $150 and 2 yr Allstate, I'd finally bite. Otherwise gotta hope and pray for a $299 BF or Xmas deal on the 1006. Wishingful thinking lol
a "serial number safe zone"...? wtf are you talking about?
Both sound basically similar to me, the Sony's get "dirty" faster as the cloth cups attract dirt/sweat/dust more easy than the more plasticy cups of the Boses. The Sony's are not great for sweaty workouts, which is why I keep them for low intensity stuff. My previous XM3s developed mic interference (whining coil noises when playing music) after 2-3 years, you could fix it for a while by "squeezing" the cans but it comes back. My XM4s have started having a similar intermittent problem after 3 years too.
I find the Boses slightly more comfortable after 2 hours or so, but thats a personal head/ear size preference thing I think as my wife finds both too heavy/big for her head while they feel great to me.
I like the touch controls of the Sonys more than the Boses, its nice just swiping on the outside of the right can to fast forward/rewind, nothing really similar on the Boses.
Overall, gun to head I'd probably only pick the Boses but I really like having both models, Sony's for leisure stuff and Bose for sweatier stuff. I am traveling for a week tomorrow and am taking my Boses.
Only other thing I'd say is get a dark color, I have white/sand on mine and after 3 years both are kinda dirty, I've tried everything to clean them and while the outside gets cleaned, the inside of the cans are starting to really fall apart. Just means its about time to upgrade both, but can't really complain at all after 3-4 years of nearly daily use on both. I'll never buy a light color again though, dark blue or similar all the way.
Oh, I'd buy them new instead of refurb'd. I got the XM4s refurbed, through this deal (serendipity on eBay) and like 30 days after I bought it, they went on a similar clearance price for brand new at Costco. doh!

To my ear they sound slightly better than the XM4s, and almost the same as the XM6. So many people complain about the hinge breaking on reddit, it must be a known issue that Sony doesn't acknowledge. I haven't had mine break yet, but I am sure the plastic will get brittle over time.
is the anc on xm5 better than xm4 ? is it significantly better
