If you need storage you can always get external SSD. This is a great deal

External storage is a bother when dealing with a laptop. Especially when you do use it on your lap.

What do you have on it? I'm wondering because I have an older MacBook Pro from 2013 that I wanted to upgrade to this one. The keyboard gets stuck and double presses the space key. I'm at 83GB out of 256 GB and I have 50k+ photos and videos. I'm not very computer savvy but know that the operating system takes up some memory. Is that the case with this one? I don't want to upgrade just to have it stop working.

there is a huge improvement from intel based to M series based processor. For memory, I have used about 180gb which includes few programming softwares and day to day use apps like MS Office, Chrome, Whatsapp etc. I do not use it for media storage as those are in my Cloud. If you precious photos then I'd recommend to have backup in Cloud which makes low memory NOT an issue. But yea, if you do editing of media then you can run out of space and you would need to go with 1TB or higher.

256 GB is enough for like 90 % of users of this laptop ! if you use it for work my bother with the AIR at all use an Pro model or buy an 512/1T version the upcharge should be not the issue if you use it for work.

today majority is stored anyway in the cloud

this is the entrance model from apple for private users which , surf, chat , browse and home bank for all this 256 is more than enough

this 256 is to small statement is the same with people saying an 300 miles EV isnt enough its enought for 98 % of daily use and smaller road trips for the once in the year longer road trips its anyway cheaper to rent an gas guzzler and do it

Never heard a complaint on the 8GB RAM/256GB SSD about utilizing cloud storage. It was constant complaining about the 8GB of RAM. Now the goalposts for the whiners have been moved since 16GB RAM is the baseline. Once they upgrade the base storage, they will move to nits of brightness on the display. It will never end. If it doesn't work for your large "photo" collection, buy an Acer Windows machine.

yep. I have 50gb iCloud subscription and pay 99 cents a month for it which is shared with family. It helps to get few GB extra on top of 5gb free iCloud per person.
If I'd seriously need anything major then I am too frugal to pay additional $200 for upgrading from 256gb to 500gb and instead I'd buy a USB hard disk/SSD for $30 to 50 per TB and set up as NAS with my router or spend few hours on learning how to configure as $30 Raspberry Pi to set up as NAS box .
