The waist strap is not padded aka not load bearing. This type of strap is helpful to keep the bag close to your body, but won't help you take weight off of your shoulders.

I have packed a 10 day trip in a similar bag (tshirts, shorts, jeans, socks, shoes, flip flops, laptop, toiletry bag, electronics bag, hats, tablet) with comfort.

Significant amount of space available in these things if you've not used one before. Mine is going on 3 or 4 years of use and no ripped seams yet. There are definitely better quality options out there at a higher price, if you are a "buy it for life" type, but this has been a great purchase for me at $40-something when I got it.

it's a 40L backpack lol. it's the same size as every other 40L backpack.

Understood; like I tried to convey, there is a "significant amount of space available in these things if you've not used one before," as I was surprised/impressed - blows away the "3-day" claim in my use cases.

there are 100 photos uploaded by customers in the reviews but no one shows what the bag looks like with the main compartments open. does it fully clamshell?

Yes; the main compartment zippers both open to a point just past the bottom, allowing full clamshell opening.
