Hardware cloth is never cheap.

I have watched it keep groundhogs from getting into my garden, though. You could tell it was frustrated that it couldn't bypass the makeshift fence I had made

I was looking at this for my garden. This one looks better though, same gauge, height, length but it's PVC coated which I wanted for weather protection. Only $4 more. I am debating whether to get 48" or 60" (different brand).

this deal isn't great but not bad... I've purchased these in the past but the 1/4" instead of 1/2". The 1/2" shoudl be fine for garden beds but i used these to roll out on the ground to help w/gophers under a layer of DG, packed sand depending on the project.

do you need coated so it doesn't corrode or is galvanized enough?

How did you know it was frustrated? Pacing back and forth muttering and smoking a Winston?
I just watched it go at it from the window to see how strong the hardware cloth really was. At first it just tried to pull at the wire, but when it realized it couldn't simply tug the wire out or apart it started wildly pulling at the wire like you would see a dog with a toy. I eventually just scared it off because the only thing holding the cloth to the ground was some tent spikes that would likely get pulled out before the hardware cloth gave.Real protection would have been to bury the cloth, but it's worked well enough, and the only animals that got in after that were mice and voles, which had different ways to get in since they were smaller.

I think it preferred Marlboro, though
