When I bought mine pulling it all way up was hard and machine did not have enough power to compress the grinds well. The content in waste bin was quite wet. After working it back and forth few dozen times it loosened and started producing better espresso. The coffee pucks in waste bin became much drier and well formed. I did not have to waste pound on coffee for that.
Still few espresso cups will have to be made until it's brain learns the grinding cycle. They have some elaborate algorithm that makes small adjustment based on energy used by the motor, so that will take few cycles to fully set in, but nowhere close to 50 cycles people sometimes report, assuming you break in brew group manually.
Could you elaborate what you mean? Pull internal mechanism? I am really curious, I just got the 5500 refurb for $450 and wondering if there is a way to speed up the break in period.

Pull brew group for washing weekly, and also make sure to wash internal from coffee grinds. I use spray bottle adjusted for thin stream and wash all dirt from inside that way. Coffee channel is cleaned by round brush from the top. Then wipe it off inside. Takes about 2-3 min. Perhaps worth making video about.
If you see significant accumulation of coffee grinds inside during cleaning, that is the indication brew group is not fully broken is, and does not lock in the final position with pin sticking out like on video above, need to work it some more, perhaps add some silicone grease in a friction points. Took me a while to realize that.
Greasing - need to grease the brew group every 3 month or so (with 4-5 double espresso daily for me), using food safe silicon grease. Also add thin layer around o-rings. I have never done grinder greasing.

installing RO is not an option for me, what is the next option? Brita filter ?

Mine is still active with expected delivery of Thursday, but after number of cancelations previously, I've learned to never feel safe on a deal until it ships.

It tastes better to me than unfiltered well water - for drinking, coffee, tea and any other cooking. I have never tried using distilled water for coffee. If concerned, add pH and mineral filters to your RO system, but they did not do any good for me.
