From other deals in the past on Verizon postpaid, I think you can ask for a prorated bill for the # of days of service. Or maybe that's just in the first three days. If you cancel within 72 hours, supposedly, you can get your activation fee refunded.

With phones that ship rather than you can pick them up in store and activate in store, I don't know how easy it is to get the plan cancelled within 3 days.

How would it be free? Or are you referring to just paying a minimal total amount for the Verizon plan so that the plan part of the equation would be practically free?

Wouldn't you still be paying $499 for the phone? (plus sales tax)
