This is the one that is/was plagued with buggy firmware, high cpu and intermittent connection problems. Its a pity since the hardware specs look great. Maybe everything will be fixed in a future firmware update? I'd avoid for now

Supposedly some have said the latest firmware fixed some issues [snbforums.com] and also has merlin support [asuswrt-merlin.net]

If you intend to extend this in the future, you are better served with a UniFi AP based setup. I tried both the Asus XT8 and ET8 and both were plagued by overall dropouts, random device connectivity issues, and one firmware update would fix it and the next would bring back some new flavor of issue.

I paid $400+ for 2 packs of the XT/ET8, in comparison a UniFi setup of cloud gateway ultra + 2x U7 lites is $329 and will be more stable (I got the U7 Pros which are more expensive but honestly should have gone with the lites)

Bought two of these from Best Buy a few months ago with the added bonus of the trade-in discount.

For context, I'm using them as nodes in an AiMesh setup with a BE96U as the primary unit (an OPNsense box is my primary router). I upgraded the firmware on both units immediately and then factory reset before deploying.

Neither unit has suffered any of the issues that plagued the early adopters. In fact, they've been very stable with great performance.

how much is it better than ac68u? i have verizon fios 300mb. i never experience any problems with 6ppl watching YouTube. of couse not all 4k, which my eyes take less than 3sec getting used to 1080p from 4k in my c3 77in oled from 4ft away.

I bought one of these early in the year and pretty much hated it. There were many problems including crashing multiple times a day. HOWEVER, the firmware was finally fixed several months ago, and it now works great. I can finally recommend this router!

Thanks for sharing that info. If you're using BE96U and BE92 behind an OPNsense router, wouldn't the BE96U and BE92 just be wired access points? Are they still using AiMesh, since the OPNsense box is the router? Thanks.

I'm literally in the same boat...Three AC68U units wired back haul going solid for almost a decade now. Kinda tempted to upgrade, but everything still works...

I completely disagree with this. UBI will cost twice what asus will and I've had zero issues with asus out of the box.

They are set up using AiMesh with the BE96U as the parent and the 92Us as nodes. The mesh setup differs from straightforward APs because you get the (ostensible) mesh advantages like smoother handoff while roaming, so the more powerful 96U is tasked with the computational heavy lifting that goes into that. But for all intents and purposes, yes, it's glorified AP.

newer / faster router won't make a difference if you're mainly just consuming stuff off internet and not running into any buffering issue or noticed any lag when loading up stuff when everyone else is doing something online. you will know when is the right time to upgrade when you start cranking up video quality or start messing around with local network.

If you only have 300mb, I think you would be wasting your money to upgrade to this. maybe a RT-AX68u or RT-AX86u.
