But you can't turn them off and leave them off because it defaults to "lights on" mode every time your computer is powered off/on or every time it snoozes and wakes up. FYI. I thought about getting this, but this is a deal breaker for me. Sounds annoying.

So it seems like I'm always having to turn off the lights."
This is actually crucial. Some speakers volume when turned on, start in the default loud level. Some like this turns on with the lights on. And you have to readjust every time its turned on because it has no memory of the last setting position. It is very annoying.
Speaking of device this thing is connected to, does it support playing from an SD card or from a flash drive? Ideally, leave it plugged into the wall as it does so?
