the 3S version of this paddle is also on Woot for about $119. Please note that it is not approved for tournament play.

Nah don't listen to that guy. The 3S is UPA-A approved and can be used in any tournament. It's the original Gen 3 and the MOD TA-15 that were banned

thanks. what would make a paddle banned for tournaments?

Usually too much power or spin will get a paddle not approved for tournament play.

got it thanks so much. trying to get into it, just wanted a paddle that isn't bad that will make me think my paddle isn't working as intended so I am trying to avoid the cheap ones. This seems ok but I think a bit expensive for a first owned paddle (I borrowed before).

this is a good value, but if you're not wanting to spend > $100 then consider a Friday paddle. I used to complain about the cost of paddles, but I spend a whole lot more on shoes, since they wear out after a few months for me (I play several times a week).

The 3S is newer and has some newer technology. (NFC chip, additional foam edge, "propulsion core") Better is in the eye of the beholder. Some do like the original gen 2 paddle. Some dont like the additional power and pop.

Please note these are the 14mm versions. I think most people prefer the 16.

correction: the 3S is approved by USAP and USA-A

Wait, why is there a NFC chip?

So I can leave my wallet / phone at home and still get a Gatorade out of the vending machine?

Or when you play doubles with someone else that has a NFC chip paddle, your swings are better coordinated...?

Or is it like chipping your pet so when you lose your paddle you can track it?

Chipping for identification/registration purposes.
