I've been doing more research on OBD scanners than I'd care to. This looks pretty basic. If you just want to read error codes this should do the trick. Doesn't seem to do much beyond that.

I'm not necessarily be the best person to ask, but it largely depends on your needs, your budget, and to some extent what cars you work on.

All of these scanners will do basic things like clear codes and display sensor data, some will allow you varying degrees of control over basic maintenance functions like opening your brake calipers so you can change the pads, and others allow deeper coding functionality in specific modules.

Another hitch is that some manufacturers have specific protocols, and you may want to find a tool that works with your specific car.

Right now I'm leaning toward the XTool A30M. It's way more expensive than this (but actually still pretty cheap compared to some multi thousand dollar pro devices), but it has a lot of functionality, and no subscription. I used to have an OBD Eleven for my Audi, and it was fantastic. With that one I was able to set my gauges to sweep on startup, play with my brake assist, turn off my seatbelt warning, and adjust my headlights.

How often is your car breaking?

You can go to a reputable auto parts store and they will read your codes for free.
