Except I've never once gotten close to those speeds, and neither standard seemed to make a difference. I think the best I've ever gotten was on a M3 mac thunderbolt port.
Usb c doesn't mean it doesn't even 10Gbps, might be 5. Entirely depends on your hardware having explicit 40Gbps support.

I had it for a month. Was duped by the "gold standard" stories. Connected via Thunderbolt, with industrial-grade, DRAM-enabled, 2TB SK hynix inside. Speeds as advertised. No overheating at max speeds. But... constant disconnects. Mac M4 Pro goes to sleep - disconnect. Another Thunderbolt port gets connected - disconnect again. Reddit is full of debates on how to "cure" the problem. The only solution is to never let drives go to sleep and to use Amphetamine (or similar) package to prevent Mac from going to sleep as a whole. I've got tired of Mac constantly running, without even being allowed to go into "power nap" mode, so I got rid of it, and bought a Satechi one instead. That one constantly "seeps" microscopic amount of power to maintain Thunderbolt link active, and now I haven't seen a single disconnect in many months. They all use the same ASM controller chip, only Satechi has some extra circuit to keep Thunderbolt "active" all the time. Problem solved.

Are you sure you are comparing to USB4.0/TB3/TB4 speed enclosures? 10gbps speed enclosure can be as low as less than $10.

Same one under a different name for $60 with coupon. I got it a few days ago and its pretty substantial. I have a 990 EVO Plus 4TB and it does get warm, but it performs great.

You need a port that that also supports 40gbps. Not all USB C are the same. USB C can have a speed from 480mbps to 40gbps (or even higher).

I am using an Acasis TBU405 Air and an Acasis TBU 405 Pro, each loaded with a Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB, connected to the TB4 ports of an Apple MacBook M1 Pro. For all practical purposes, I am getting the same file loading times (i.e. for photo editing) as for an internal SSD. Except for that my combined investment was about $520. Apple charges you $2,400 for an internal 8TB SSD. Almost $2,0000 saved with no noticeable difference in performance.

I bought this last month for $70. That is the normal price. It is huge, lot bigger than probably required. They supply one strip of heat conductive strip. I installed a Samsung 990 and noticed that the strip wasn't touching the metal evenly. I added another strip and then I could see the imprint of the metal on the strip. Then I connected it to the USB 3 port on my Dell inspiron and formatted the HD for booting. I had forgotten which was the thunderbolt ports and got it wrong. Anyway later I put it on the thunderbolt ports and it won't boot from it but does recognize it if I insert. It transfers file(writing to this USB) at about 210Mb/s. My old WD easystore drive does it at about 100Mb/s but it is also 5 years old, no idea what the rating really is. Not sure if I am getting the full speed advantage.

I have been using both the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB and the SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB. No issues.

I got this unit this morning and couldn't understand why my write speeds were so poor, while the read speeds were fine. I found these instructions after a little research and they may help someone else as well. now both my read and write speeds are fast as expected:

Write caching on Windows
By default, Windows uses a "Quick removal" policy for external drives, which disables write caching to prioritize data safety. For the highest performance, you must manually enable write caching in the Device Manager.
How to enable write caching on Windows:
Connect your Thunderbolt drive to your PC.
Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button.
Expand the Disk drives category.
Right-click your external Thunderbolt drive and select Properties.
Navigate to the Policies tab.
Select the Better performance option.
Check the box for Enable write caching on the device.
Click OK.
