Ive had a 20V DCD996 since 2018(older XR hammer drill, 3 speed gearbox) and the thing is a monster! Incredibe torque and very durable. I push my tools hard every day and it has never quit. I've used it to start push mower engines while troubleshooting (I even mowed grass for a few minutes while spinning it over like this like a true redneck), stir full 5 gallon buckets of concrete on high (3 speed gearbox means less torque on high but it doesn't struggle) with the strangely shaped large dewalt 4 blade paddle mixer, hundreds of hammer drill mode holes and wet diamond core bit holes, and etc.
I used to have an electric dewalt hammer drill I bought in 2015 or so that did indeed get stuck in hammer mode. It had a plastic switch to change modes on the top but idk about the internals. I didn't feel like taking it apart to fix it so I gave it to a friend that does concrete work and really wanted it. Last I talked to him a few months ago he still has it and said it looks like crap and the cord got chewed up pretty bad but it still works.
Sorry for the wall of text. Hope this helps.
