Garmin's GPS accuracy is much better…at least with their Forerunner watches.

I've owned this for a year and now I have an Apple Watch Ultra 3. The apple watch is waaaay better. My wife has the Apple Watch 11 and it's waaay better. I imagine even the SE will be superior.
Had it for a year? It released in April 2025

I think you gotta go with what's more important to you in this case.
Garmin: Wins with fitness and health tracking and battery life
Apple: Wins for the smartwatch functionality

So if you're looking for an advanced fitness/health tracker, go with the garmin. If you're looking for a smartwatch and already are in the Apple ecosystem and don't mind having to charge it every day, the Apple Watch is probably better.

I've seen a few in-depth comparisons online so def check some of those out! I think that the Venu series might also be closer to the AW than this line, although it's VERY close.

Garmin is just not what it used to be anymore

at least not for the price

the problem is their firmware development has become terrible

I think they fired a bunch of people around 2020 and it's never been the same since

Like my vivoactive 5 don't see any new features on this one that I need so will stick with the 5....I would save money and buy the 5 unless there is something new on this that you absolutely have to have. Use my 5 for running, eliptical and steps I am happy with how fast it picks up satellite for runs and its accuracy. Rarely use spo2 feature but could see it coming in handy if I was in respiratory distress. Battery life is 7-10 days even when using running feature sometimes.

on a personal level I just bought the Vivoactive 5 for $199 on sale, but I'm going to get this because I really want the smart wake feature. The rest is less important but I'm going for it! I really love my 5 so far though.

Anything watch with battery lasting a day or two at best is called a 'gizmo'.
If you just want an accessory that looks good on your wrist, don't limit yourself to 'smartwatch'.
Apple watches have fancy screens and that's it. You may have seen news about Apple watches detecting AFib but it's NOT reliable.
I can set the phone aside for charging, but it's dumb to take the watch off and set it aside charging throughout the day.
