I've been eyeing a Samsonite hardside carry-on in our Staples store priced at $149.00. Same one costs $179.88 at Amazon.

Guessing that this reward points deal will only be for in-store purchases..?
Typically but this is an unusual deal, we'll find out Sunday. I'd think store stock is rather limited in general. I don't even recall seeing luggage for sale at my local store, but then again, I've never looked (say vs a computer bag or knapsack type thing)

They expire in 18 months, _unless_ you do some transaction at Staples (buy something, redeem points). If you do that at least once every 18 months, the points last forever. That being said, you never know if the Rewards program will change sometime in the future.
May I ask where you are getting the 18 months expiration from? Staples advertises their rewards as never expiring, can you please post a link or screenshot from Staples verifying this?

From here (scroll down to the FAQ):

https://www.staples.com/lp/easyrewardsoverview

Excerpt: "Do my Easy Rewards points expire?
Points don't expire so long as your Easy Rewards member account is active. For an account to remain active, a member must earn or redeem at least one point in an 18-month period."

But you never know when they'll change things.... Always sleep with one eye open.

Probably. Some of the past 100% back deals on things like batteries and paper were in-store and online, but something like this seems highly likely to be in-store only. And ever since they got rid of the kiosks, I haven't taken the time to figure out how to do an online purchase, and have it count as an in-store purchase. I'm assuming you can probably go to the tech desk and ask them to do an online order there? (and pay for it at the cashier).

Thank you! oh believe me I know....seen many changes in their program over the years. But honestly that 18 month thing is pretty well kept a secret. Not that it affects me, but I really was under the impression from their marketing of their rewards program that rewards NEVER expire (unless of course if you don't do anything in 18 months, which they seem to have left off the blurbs most people see on their site)

Yeah. Unrelated, but I unfortunately let over 100,000 American Airlines frequent flier miles expire because I didn't have any activity in 18months Frown . I was really bummed.

Ouch, that's awful! Say, I don't know how long it's been since the miles expired, but: if it hasn't been more than a year, you should definitely call them, and say, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize I let my miles expire. It's my fault, but could you please have mercy on me and restore them?"

They've been known to do that (and the worst they can do is say "no").

From that point on, you can earn an occasional few miles by making online purchases through their online shopping portal (where they give you x miles/$1 spent) and keep the miles from expiring.

I feel for ya. And if you feel the need to earn them back somehow, you can always sign up for one of their Citibank AAdvantage credit cards (some of them have the annual fee waived for the first year, so you can keep it for a year, wait until they charge you the annual fee for year 2, then call them to cancel the card and refund you that fee). You can get 50k and 70k miles at a time, that way.

Of course, you might have already done these things, but I figured it's worth mentioning.

You have to place the order at register with sales associate, which is a pain and not the same as pay in store. The new company who took over from staples got rid of online/paying in store section. It was different than online order.

placing an order via kiosks was easy and convenient.

Ugh, so that means that the online order you place with the sales associate counts as an online order, and not an in-store order (like it did in the past)?

Thanks for the info. I was afraid of that - the thing I had greatly feared has come upon me.... Maybe it'll change in 10 years.

HAHAHA, I did....and they said no problem, we'll restore your miles....for over $1000 in 'redeposit' fees. Yeah, no. I obviously wasn't flying American Airlines anymore since I let it expire with no action for 18mo.

I found out that the nice thing about ordering instore is that they waived the shipping fee. Not sure if that is universal, but my store did it. I originally tried ordering online from home, and was hit with a shipping fee. So I went to buy it instore instead, but they didn't have it. So they ordered it for me with no shipping.

Update from an email received today:

100% back in points on all luggage and in-store passport photos.

I suppose the passport photo deal is interesting for some people, too.
