Generation

13th generation - 2023 release.

Just a helpful comment for those thinking there's a new version

No, unfortunately. Amazon is going to be moving to an OS developed in-house based on Linux they are calling Nova OS. They've finally grown tired of the rooting and the sideloading. They are moving to something completely propriety and locked down that they can fully control.

its android, but it is "locked" to the amazon app market. there are workarounds, but not always easy. that said, this is about good enough for watching tv/movies and little else.

You think this sucks? I have a wrench that sucks worse. Tried hammering a few nails with it and it was terrible! You gotta use the tool for its purpose. This is a great tablet with a great screen...for use within the Amazon and prime ecosystems. If you want a pure android tablet, go to Samsung...

Isn't there like a Prime Day or something coming at the beginning of Oct, wonder if pricing will be even better. I have an old HD 8 that I use as a 2nd display for my custom ECU in my project car to display the sensors and such. Anyone know if this 10 or 11 will run DJI Fly? I'd scoop one to run as a dedicated drone screen....my 8 isnt new enough to have the necessary hardware inside to run it.

FYI, it looks like an exploit was released yesterday for Fire Tablets running Fire OS 7 and 8 (which includes this tablet) allowing certain restrictions on Fire OS to be removed. Examples include disabling updates, replacing the default launcher, de-bloating, removing ads, etc. It'll still be running Fire OS, but these hacks do make this tablet feel more like Android and much more usable.
Not implying this 2.5 year old tablet is worth the price even with this exploit, but it may be worth checking out if you already own one.
is this through fire toolbox or ssomething else? And if FTB, what is the version number? (searching their site is difficult) . Thx

Looking at future upgrades... why the hell is amazon not allowing me to trade in my 3rd gen fire TV cube (POS) but they would take 5 dollars for an echo dot from 2019? Kinda grimy if you ask me. Can anyone else that has a cube confirm?

Is it on Fire OS? or on the Android OS?

I heard that Amazon is ditching its own fire OS and soon will be moving to Android OS.
It's actually opposite. Their current OS is based on Android so apps can be sideloaded. The new VegaOS will be a custom Linux-based OS that prevents current workarounds. But I'm time, some smart people will undoubtedly figure out a new solution, because there are tons of Linux devs.

Fire Toolbox, yes. Version 42, which was released the other day. I saw it on XDA. Didn't post a link because I didn't really know what the rules are for posting external links to things like that.

The hardware announcement event is going on live right now, so products wont show up on Amazon until later. The event is not being streamed but you can follow the event on sites like engadget.

I don't recommend this tablet. At this price you can get a Tab A9 with better OS or any other real android tablet.
Even using toolbox to install google stuff it doesn't really work well, and the android version is 11 so it has some limitations. I paid $80 for mine and I still fell I didn't get a good deal

You are right. I have Samsung Tab A9+ with 128G. I paid $220. I also the Fire Max 11 which I paid around $150 after trade-in. Now, you can get Samsung Tab A9+ 128G for less than $200. (64G version is priced even less)

Samsung Tab A9+ is already on Android 15. Fire Max 11 is based on Android 11.

You can use Fire Toolbox to install Google Play in Fire Max 11. Then you get Android apps.

However, when the Android apps start to require Android 12 or above, a lot of apps won't be supported in Fire Max 11.

Samsung is not perfect. The A series tablet has shorter Android update schedule. There is probably 1 more Android update for Tab A9+. But Samsung tablets are popular, and people build custom rom for those. I learned the xda web site and I was able to install custom ROM on some older Samsung tablets. Some old Samsung tablets now get Android 15 with custom rom.

How much I like Fire Max 11? I have not even turned on the device for a while.

I have various generations of Fire HD 8, Fire HD 10 sitting around.
Amazon would take back my old Fire Tablet for $5 each and 20% off purchase of new device.
But I don't see any better tablet from Amazon. So, I am holding off the $5 trade in for now.
