"There are 1,114,051 films." banner on that page.

Vs. 3,072 results here:
https://films.criterionchannel.com/

What explains the huge difference?

I had this for a year recently and a lot of the streams were not at the highest bitrate available - which seemed odd for Criterion.

You need a pro account to view Letterboxd filters, so it's showing every film in the database

A lot of the criterion channel is vintage film restoration. If 4k is the only metric by which you judge movies, they also sell excellent 4k Blu rays.

Of course. Strange that they can handle 4k transfers on physical media but on streaming, it is a bridge too far.

I have had this service for 2 or 3 years now. It is a no brainer for movie nerds. Tons of variety. You can share the account with friends pretty easily too.

I have had this since it launched and never used it, lol. It has the highest quality movies, though.

I'm more than reasonable to cut Criterion slack if they won't stream their collection in the best damn resolution and audio codecs possible. They are such a treasure in terms of movie restoration and excellence in film archival for future generations. Think of all the effort, the investment, the CHALLENGE to produce a 4K Blu-ray and have the gall to ask $30+ for the privilege of owning a premium product in declining usage. Why should they be expected to undercut their own physical media efforts by streaming at a similar quality?
Now I've never personally subscribed to their subscription service. If their stream quality looks more like a DVD instead of a Blu-ray, then they loose points in my mind.
