Apple doesn't make record quarterly profits by selling stuff at competitive prices. Stockholders would hear nothing of it! Selling <$100 of chips for $1000 is exactly how they do it!

To be fair, my understanding is the larger storage models such as this have 16gb of ram instead of 8gb and a slightly better CPU.
Does that justify the many times price increase? Probably not, but it's more than just a storage upgrade and Apple doesn't explain that well.
