Is the M5 Mac Mini coming?
They sure are pricing them as such.

When this thing was launched Nov 2024, it was $599.

...about 5 months later, maybe not even, the $450 deals started

Was it ever truly 599 though? From jump, through the Apple edu store it was 499, and no verification required.

it is. PC stands for personal computer not Windows OS based machine. iPad or Android Tablet is also a PC

It's not as if this is pricing advertised by Apple or major retailers like Best Buy. This is 'in-store only' pricing @ Microcenter, a place that often has other in-store only prices that are significantly lower than can be had anywhere else.

The M5 mini will come, eventually, but their release cadence on these is roughly once every 2 years, so probably not until late 2026.

Best Buy will typically price match if you chat them up.

256gb ssd kills the deal. You will have to have everything on an external ssd which will cut your speed in half.
WRONG!. in fact you'll get FASTER speeds with an external drive! In fact, my 970 Evo plus and Intel 670p pretty much get 3000 read/write!

I got it at $450 in microcenter last month. Best bang for the buck. It can even locally host 8bit llms without any hiccup

Have you tested out 12b llms? e.g. the latest mistral-nemo or phi4?

You can use any windows or Mac pc to create full backups. Just make sure the pc has enough storage or you have an external drive.
this is a lie. backup to an external harddrive is not supported on windows. there are workarounds though.

I kept hearing 256GB was too small. So I was trying to figure out how to move system apps and data to the 2TB external SSD dock. No need. I've been using an M4 Mac Mini with 256GB storage since June, and I'm only using 36% of the 256GB.
  • Time machine is using 177GB, but I think that needs to be on external storage anyway.
  • That leaves about 40GB on my external SSD, which would fit fine on the internal SSD.
  • I do software development, so not a light user. I installed a bunch of apps.
  • I think the big things that will eat storage are video and audio files. They should stream fine from an external SSD (if just consuming).
  • Unless you do heavy audio/video editing and/or gaming I think 256GB is OK. Especially when supplemented with an external drive.
