In case anyone sees this, I ordered the desk the day the deal was posted. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday but they haven't even shipped it yet.

They like to cut the desktop surface into two long strips like this, to save on shipping costs and get the price lower, but personally I recommend most people pay a little more for a single top surface, or buy this and purchase a single top surface piece locally (better yet, watch Facebook Marketplace for a few weeks until somebody gives away a desk, then rob the top piece from it for this motorized base - I see free desks on marketplace constantly). Of course you should account for the fact that this particular motorized base is likely not strong enough for anything super heavy like a butcher block desk surface. After swapping over, the two pieces you have leftover from this desk could be repurposed as two wall-mounted shelves, if desired.

Perfectly good ideas! Just a note, this is split lengthwise on the long axis which is better than 1 (or 2) splits on the short axis. Desk has a metal cross support that should run directly under the split so I would expect its plenty sturdy. I have a cheap kids desk in 3 pieces along the short axis that I'm not a fan of in comparison (but its fine for what it is). If the specs are believable at 170ish pounds capacity (and that may be AFTER the weight of the top is already factored in), you'd be more than good with practically any top. I'm seeing 55x24x1.5 butcher block tops around 50lbs (easy to forget that MDF and engineered products are usually denser than solid wood options).

I have this desk. I am space limited so this works good for me. Pros it's dirt cheap for a single motor sit stand desk with memory settings. Only real cons I had were it's not dual motor, split board both options would cost considerably more. I threw a large desk pad over mine so I don't notice the split. If you use the desk to write or draw, you'll probably want a single piece top instead or at least large writing surface to cover it.

Butcher block tops can vary and some of the heavier weigh close to 200 lbs, plus it's worth noting that the rated weight capacity advertised for this product would be based on its capacity distributed across the original desk surface. Even a relatively light butcher block option could introduce more leverage against the frame and motor, if that weight is distributed over a larger surface area. And once you start loading up the desk you may find you're exceeding the manufacturer's intended threshold of pressure per sq inch, even at a weight that is lower than its rated capacity. Most people will do fine with a light butcher top though, but it is a factor worth considering. I think it's a good price for what you're getting, and it will do the job for most people's standing desk needs, even with the seam. I use so many motorized desks for my business I just started ordering the motorized base systems then cutting a custom desk surface to fit the space once it's in place.
