how is this compared to the gen 1 unit? I had it briefly, the only complaint I have was its short battery life.
Not even comparable. Better in every way. The Legion Go "OG" sucked. The screen was wonky and wrong, the thing was huge. This is solid upgradge across the board. Battery is bigger, its more efficient, steam os is better on handhelds than windows - but the device can easily have windows installed if thats your thing.

Unless you need the detachable controllers and a 144Hz screen, a bigger 8.8-inch screen this is definitely better. It of course does not have detachable controllers, has a 120 Hz screen and is an 8 inch. It has the same processor but more and faster RAM, lighter, and the ergonomics are way better. I also like the fact that both USB-4s are on the top and not like the OG where one was at the top and the other at the bottom.

To further your point, it would be rare to even take full advantage of the 120 hz screen. You would probably need frame generation and the absolute lowest settings to even approach 120 fps on most games. I have an Ally Z1E and I'm usually playing around 60 fps. I'm sure doubling the RAM helps, but I doubt that much.

Its great.
Not sure what the screen issue was unless you are referring to early issues with screen drivers because the screen is natively portrait. There are no current screen issues that I am aware of with mine or in the Reddit community. (However the uniqueness of the screen is partly responsible for slowness with drivers)
As always, new technology is faster/better than older technology. Thats like saying an iPhone 15 sucks because its not as good as an iPhone 17.
So "Yes" the Go S has a bigger battery and more/faster RAM. However,
1. The Original LeGo is one of 4 handhelds (Legion and Steam) with a true trackpad. Anyone that plays mouse dependent games or uses the LeGo for Windows appreciates that
2. The LeGo is bigger and that matters if you want to use a device in table top mode. An 8.8" screen makes a difference in this context.
3. You can run SteamOS on the LeGo 1. Steam took care of that.
4. There is a huge price difference between the Lego 1 and its true successor the Lego 2. The Lego S is not really a successor.
So I am happy with my Lego 1. I dont sit there and "boo hoo" because it supposedly sucks. For $550 on sale (or less lightly used), its a good value.
My hesitation here would be a worry that the return/exchange was due to a dead pixel.
Anyone know how common of an issue that is with these handhelds?
You can just return it. FWIW, I'm active on the LGO subreddit and I've never heard a complaint about dead pixels. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but not that I've seen.
I have this handheld and its been my favorite. Cant go back to 7" screens after using this.
Same. My Ally was cool, because it was everything that I wanted.
After using it a while, I didn't feel that it was comfortable and the screen was smaller than I wanted. I got the Windows version of this Legion Go S for $650 NEW at Walmart a while back and man is the screen so big and nice. Plus, its way more comfortable to hold in my hands.
Z2E isn't worth the price difference and it has more ram than the XBox Ally and Ally X. A steal, plus I can install SteamOs or Bazzite if I wanted.
Detachable controllers (I don't want that feature. Its two points of failure that aren't needed.)
40.7mm x 298.83mm x 131mm / 1.60″ x 5.16" x 11.76″
854g / 1.88lbs
The screen on the OG is nice, but the resolution is overkill and affects performance and battery. Plus, I think that screen was a tablet screen and defaults to the long-way being vertical or something like that.

I love the Ally X and the massive battery - but the screen on this is nice, especially the older I get...
