i have 3 black indio retros (telecaster knock off,) with the maple necks and maple fret boards i got for $33.33 each shipped a few years ago when 2 deep discount coupon codes stacked together along with the 3+ quantity discount...they are the best guitars i have ever played in every way and not lying or exaggerating...its that simple. ive been playing for 35 years and am skilled and have 16 other guitars including 89 les paul, etc. and none are even close to how good these indio retros are. the sound , the pickups the construction, the finish, the hardware, the worksmanship - all tops. only weakness is the average tuners but they're still fine. it is truly amazing. i would not sell any of them for under $1000.

That headstock is hideous
looks only matter to players with low to marginal skill

Comes with gig bag, d'addario strings , and the action feels pretty damn good right out of the box!
Only thing is that that the edges of the frets are very sharp, and will need some sort of careful sanding but otherwise this thing is a great value and ready to play from the get-go if you're not a stickler for a perfect set up
The joke is all guitar's come needing extra detailed setup. Even expensive over priced ones. The DLX is supposed to be professionally setup exception and worth their slightly higher, low price.
Here's the thing. Perfect or not perfect you are eventually going to need to know how to setup a guitar anyway. So might as well get the best quality lowest cost guitar and do your own tweaking. You can get a good guitar for $58 and that's the "secret".
Stuff happens (Like FedEx) and if you get a bad anything, and that is not easily and quickly remedied then send it right back. I know Monoprice will refund your funds, if you don't wait.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. My monoprice tele had pickups that sounded terrible, thin and beyond help with an EQ. The neck is so weird to hold, and has an almost paper-like quality to it. Trying to use the guitar as a modding platform was a nightmare. One of the control plate screwholes wasn't placed far enough from the cavity so they connect and needs loctite. All the pickup and control cavities are very small and replacing parts requires a router or dremel. My replacement pickups wouldn't fit without extra work, nor would my replacement pots. It's a great starter kids guitar for a cheap way to introduce music, but they feel extremely cheap and not at all durable with poor construction. Any run of the mill squier bullet or noname pawn shop find is going to be a better guitar. At least the name on the headstock comes off easily with magic eraser.
Of course, their are bad exceptions from all sellers; but the idea these can't compete after a low, low price is very false. Guitars are basically a piece of wood, with a bit more. If made right then it's fine.
I just don't understand. If you got such a poor example why oh why didn't you just get a refund? Most of these are sweet. There's going to be problems sometimes. It's inevitable. On all brands. Just make sure you buy where you can return it, and easily. That's the only real included insurance. And how you know who's who. If there is a no hassle return, then you know they don't make a habit of needing to cover that.

How much work did you have to put into them, before they became the best playing guitars in your collection?
I'd have to sand the head-stock to a Fender Tele shape (agreed) and refinish it; but it might still be worth it. There are other choices that are not Monoprice.
Being Ash (SOME swamp ash is supposed to be lighter weight, so good IMHO and with a nice grain look; potentially), it is suppose to be a slight (FR) tonal sound advantage(bass and treble too). Basswood(best weight) is good too, unless you don't like the grain pattern. Once painted it does not matter much. Wood does not really matter on electric; but ash is ever so slightly different, and best tonally. At least potentially. No one would notice though.
It does matter for ^acoustic^ guitars BTW, and you'd want a SOLID spruce top and not just Spruce; but some laminates are fine. You can tell by looking at the wood edge in the sound hole. Layers or not. Laminates can be a bit better moisture resistant though.

I'm skeptical, but okay.
