As someone that uses everything - Zigbee, Z-Wave and Lutron - and have them aggregated on Home Assistant - I can tell you the Lutron are just better switches. They are made better and their wireless is far more bullet proof.

Literally no one sells these for 25-30 for these dimmers. Some good ones might be 35.

I need to buy a bunch of these to retrofit my house. what's the most cost effective way to do that? wait for these kinds of sales? or is there a better way when you're buying in bulk?

Same price on HD (actually 1c cheaper), and you can use the 10% veteran discount if you have that.

Edit: Actually realized the HD version does not have the wallplate, but still might be a better option if you don't need that.

Much cheaper option would be to get zooz zwave dimmers. I just put them in our new build after using an older model for 5 years. Very happy with them and Home Assistant.

You can try eBay, but this is a good sale, doesn't happen often 20-30 on eBay as someone suggested? I never had that luck but doesn't hurt to try. Home Depot and Lowe's have longer return periods than Amazon and usually have the same sale prices.

the cheapest I've gotten is $45 and I had to sell the hub to get that price. a lot of work. haven't seen that $45 price in a while either.

If you're like me and still using the original style switches, the original dimmer (PD-6WCL) is on sale as well for $55 on Amazon [amazon.com]. Same price at HD [homedepot.com] and Lowe's [lowes.com]

Lutron uses their own proprietary system, which is why you need their hub, this is the DIY version of their professional RA2/3 line. For the price of that stuff it had better be good!

Z-Wave is 900 MHz, Zigbee is 2.4 GHz. Lutron is Clear Connect - 433 MHz.
I think Philips is close on the Zigbee stuff - but again - exprensive.

I would just say their bullet proofness is why it is the best OTA updates run seamless. I literally have spent 2 days trying to get 2 Hue (Zigbee) lights to update. They cost more because they do it best.
