I've had an osprey hiking backpack (30L with side zipper) since January 2007. Zero defects or issues.

There isn't a single backpack brand I trust more.

I've traveled with this bag for nearly a decade (older version). I prefer it over the Farpoint, which a family member uses, because it weighs less, is simpler, and less bulky (think higher volume per dimensions). I'd also worry about getting hassled trying to carry-on the Farpointe. This bag has been my 1 bag on many international long trips. It's tight for more than a weekend, but if you want to move fast and go far and can live simpler, I think 40L is enough (for a simple human. Tropics no problem). I also have the Patagonia black hole and Mt Hardwear duffel. they're all very similar, I'd say comparing durability/toughness/use case (guessing weight also): Mt Hardwear > Osprey > Patagonia. my current setup is this bag for carry-on, 60L duffel checked-in if needed, osprey UL dry bag backpack and fanny pack for stuffable expansion alt daypacks. Price looks great and I'd buy again if I needed . Hope this helps some of you.

Agreed on the brand quality. This one, however, does not have a waist belt. And this *color* also has insane lettering plus a bag schematic on the back – _really_ unnecessary and unattractive.

I do love my osprey bags, and would recommend them any day. Seems like kind of an odd bag in their lineup, though. The Porter is probably a little better since it turns into essentially a duffel, but also has a waist strap and cinch straps. The Farpoint/Fairview work better as dedicated backpacks.
Seems like this might be a bit lighter than those, so maybe that's the niche.

only treking/backpacking backpacks need waist trap. waist trap on any other kind of backpack makes no sense to me.

Too small.
I need a 46L as my carry on. Porter has been the perfect carry on. So durable with great handles. The straps stowaway to make a heavy-duty duffel. The original sold for under $100 during clearance a few years back.

the PackHacker review site normally loves Osprey packs but gave this one a low score due to the TPU scratching off, no hard back panel, and no waist harness.

Wow that schematic is a crazy design choice. It's no wonder these are on clearance.

which is kind of un fair because clearly this is a travel (airplane) duffel bag where I would not want either of those?

It's a choice between being lightweight or having structure to support your packed items. No go for me.

What bag schematic are you talking about? There back of the bag is literally blank

Some of the comments are a little confusing. This is NOT a backpack. It's simply a duffle bag that instead of using one crossstrap uses two shoulder straps. But the body of the bag is nothing more than a duffle. So things like waist belts and internal structure aren't appropriate.

This is obviously untrue if you've ever traveled with a larger backpack for any extended amount of time. 40L holds a lot of weight, which is why most travel backpacks come with waist straps.

One of the first reviews on the product page is about three lack of waist straps.

What I missed was there is no waist harness. Making it unbearably heavy on shoulders if needing to walk any amount of distance. Bag is way too big to carryon shoulders alone.

I think the form factor is the main complaint. It doesn't come with a strap, so the only way to carry it is like a backpack, or using the side handle. If you're going to have to wear it like a backpack there are better options.
