No the evo does not have DRAM. That's what HMB means, it uses the host's memory (your PCs RAM) instead of having its own, unlike the pro.

This has been this low twice at B&H Photo in the last 2-3 months. Both times has been on sale there for about 24 hours. I suspect this will drop below $200 around Black Friday but probably not by much. I would wait if you don't need it now. It is a good drive however for most people. I got it from B&H for a gaming laptop used as extra storage.

Snapped one up. Doubt BF will beat this deal. Plus 10% back on Amazon store credit card if used to purchase.

I click the link and the item that comes up only shows third party sellers. The minimum price is $250. Sold out?

Building a new system for gaming, should I use this drive or my old 2TB 980 pro as the boot drive?

Waiting for 4tb for $100 deal.
You may be waiting a very long time. NAND prices are on the rise again.

Quote from Cinnagar :
Lol. Too funny... They'll stop making the NAND chips to lower supply before they let it get to that price! Samsung has already done this at least once before...
This has been going on for months and it's far from just Samsung. Most of the major non-Chinese NAND producers have cut production. NAND prices are starting to rise again.

Would this be better (performance wise, stability wise, longevity of life etc) than any 2.5 inch ssd like Crucial BX500 (for external use via an adapter)?
Yes, and I can't emphasize it strongly enough. Aside from the Samsung 870 EVO (and a few more niche drives), the SATA SSDs left on the market are mostly junk. Even when they aren't unreliable, the post-pSLC write performance is absolutely awful (generally averaging 35-80MB/s). The Crucial BX500 in particular is an utterly awful drive. I don't recommend it for any use case. On the flip side, the Samsung 990 EVO Plus is more than enough for most users.
Thank you, appreciate the response and the details.
Unfortunately, I waited too long..Smilie It's out of stock now. I guess, next time if there is one.

Portable ones are usually low quality and slow. The Sandisk ones especially are junk.

It's up to you. There's unlikely to be a perceptible difference between them.

what does it mean to be gen 4 and gen 5 at the same time? it's just gen 4 right?
It means it is gen4 x4 but it can still get it's full gen4 speed on gen5 x2.I don't know of any other commonly sold consumer drives that have that feature.

I believe it's dramless, the pro was slightly higher performing than this, but this comes with a pcie5.0*2 mode which could offer better bandwidth on certain X870/870E boards
I will never buy a Dramless NVME , especially for my servers that need cache.
Why not?

Yes. Max is Gen 4 in any scenario.
