Nope, no problem doing that.I preclear drives first (its a good test of the drive) and let it sit as an Unassigned Device. Once you are ready, stop the array and assign it and good to go.

Have you checked their prices lately? Granted I've only been tracking the WD HC530's but they are currently at $169.99. A year ago I got the same drives from SPD for $129.99. From what I've seen, used pricing has been consistently creeping up so it's refreshing to see deals again on new drives.

Are these like their "blue" drives?
No, they are ultrastar (enterprise) drives with a 5400 rpm firmware limit.

Aren't those inside Easystore's?
Or does WD put the same drives in both Easystore and Elements?

Easystore, elements and mybook all use binned ultrastar drives for the higher capacity models

While Seagate has 26TB at a similar price, is Seagate worse than WD on reliability?
Seagate drives are fine, they had some issues in the past and some people cling to those but these days Seagate drives are just as good as any other!

100% smart tests and preclear so it's ready to go and weeds out any problems while I can still return it lol. Thanks yep, just purchased. I actually just did this with another drive I bought last year. It sat on the shelf and then just last month I decided to replace a 3TB drive I bought 10 years ago, not wanting wait for it to die. Just hadn't really thought then about any consequences of sitting on the shelf. Thanks for the answer. I Google it a bit and it does seem like it's good to sit, provided it's in a semi stable, dry environment.
The only issues with sitting on a shelf is hard drives tend to decrease in price/tb over time and your warranty is wasted sitting on a shelf!

i'm undecided on this 14TB or the seagate expansion 14TB -- with exos inside.
WD element:
- $170 less 10% prime discount ~ $157 plus tax; 5400 rpm (firmware)
seagate expansion:
- $180 plus tax; enterprise exos

I wish it was the same price for the desktop hard drive 7200 RPM.

Yeah, everything is pretty much double now. I'm glad I was able to jump on that earlier deal and buy five - 4 to use in my NAS, 1 as a spare.

FWIW, when I bought 3 WD Elements 14Tb external drives earlier this year (and I was happy paying ~$170 after various discounts and my taxes) they all ended up being 7200 rpm (physically, confirmed with a spectrum analyzer app on my cell phone detecting the frequency of 7200 rpm - 120hz). The firmware might cap the performance in some way but it's not an issue for me in my NAS.

Ha my bad yes TB

This is cheapest I have seen on the 14 so gonna grab it. I will use my couple 4 TB older drives for redundancy on important movies, TV shows etc

I have like 14 western digital drives all different kinds and ages. the 2 newest ones I bought have died. I recently bought 4 of the segates because they were a great price comparatively and so far they have been great. I hope they hold up for many years to come and if they do I'll probably stop buying wd at this point because of the price to size .
