You can drink from rivers as long as they're not downstream from industry, mining, or agriculture.. since pesticides and pollutants can pass through.
IIRC, most rivers in North America are generally safe. But in some developing countries or heavily farmed areas, it can be a concern.

TL;DR: LifeStraw removes bacteria and parasites, but not viruses or chemicals. Use it in wilderness areas where the only likely contamination is biological.

Coupon code was less discount for me. Like $1.41 off each unit but I could use it for multiple quantities.

FYI: It doesn't filter out viruses, chemicals, heavy metals, or salt. Great for hiking, but not reliable in urban disaster zones.

Sorry, im new to this. When you say "great for hiking"…you mean like for filtering river water or something?

Thanks for the clarification, i had no idea it didn't filter out those things you mentioned.

but it's there a moderately priced small ish filter that would be useful as a back up for a disaster bag?

buy a Sawyer, this is pointless since you're not able to bring the water with you

This is about as good as any small filter. A Sawyer filter can remove viruses (so can a Steripen), but viruses are not a common surface water contamination in the US. That is more important in tropical areas.

No filter will remove salt or chemical contamination (other than plastic particles). You would need to run through a distillation device to remove that stuff. That is what you would want to do in an Urban environment. They are too heavy for backpacking so not a lot of mass produced items that are light and cheap.
