It's a new phone from this year, so it would still have manufacturer warranty coverage

Should work, but without a receipt for proof of purchase, you'd only be covered from the manufacturing date.

Regardless, the phone has been out 8 months old. So a minimum of 4 months must be remaining on the warranty even if this was an early device.
