I'm with you. I'd buy a lot of things used but for some reason headphones are not one of them.

By soak do you mean like submerging the ear buds and charging case in hydrogen peroxide?

I clean any open-box earbuds I buy by soaking them in hydrogen peroxide to remove earwax and kill germs, including the case. After this treatment, there's no wax or germs from previous owners. The rest is psychological—like drinking distilled water from urine. While it's still 100% water, the mental factor matters. It's up to you whether you want to invest time cleaning, and how much that psychological aspect affects you. For me, this perception often makes second-hand earbuds cheaper, and I've bought many open-box pairs for a third of the new price.
