Just remember that, if you are going to Hokkaido, the cherry blossoms bloom nicely in late April at the earliest and sometimes do not reach the full bloom phase until early May (or even later).

I checked SFO to NRT for 12/1 - 12/10 and it was the same price. only weird thing is it said departing flight from SFO would be direct through zipair and only 9 hours. That can't be right, right?

For anyone wondering, Asiana is a great airline. Have done a few trips in economy with them and the seats have incredibly generous recline. Cabin food is actually delicious and good service (had a bibimbap bowl that was near restaurant grade, super surprising).

They're slated to merge with Korean in the near future, so the risk is low in the event of this happening before your trip (most likely Korean would cover routes or accommodate passengers).

I will however note that the "genius" premium economy is not worth it in the event you are offered a paid upgrade for the flight. It's the same economy seat with slightly more leg room and the regular economy service. The regular economy seats also have 32 or 33 inches, which is already generous.

They crashed in SF about a decade ago during landing if nobody seems to remember. Pilot's fault!

it's right. zipair flies nonstop to tokyo narita, which is way south of sapporo. i suppose if you are in san fran, you can do the zipair deal and take the train up to hokkaido which is about 2 hours one way. it'd be around $70+ USD though...on the shinkasen.

The fastest regularly-scheduled Shinkansen trains from Tokyo to Hakodate (Shin-Hakodate Hokuto) in Hokkaido take 3 hours and 57 minutes. Most runs take about 4 hours and 10 minutes. Do not forget also that it takes 75 minutes from NRT to Tokyo via the JR Narita Express.

The non-discounted Hokkaido Shinkansen fare from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate Hokuto in the ordinary class is typically 23,560 yen ($157 at $ = 150 yen) each way.

I strongly encourage anyone who wants to get to Hokkaido from Tokyo to look into the air options which offer many discounted fares.

i agree. this is why this deal, flying directly into hokkaido, makes it such a good deal.

I flew Tokyo to Sapporo for 100 each way during weekdays. That also leaves your options open to explore Honshu and Hokkaido in the same trip which to me is a better experience.

am I correct in saying unless you are the ultimate train buff the only legit way to get to Tokyo from Sapporo is by air?

According to Nikkei, 98% of those who travel between Tokyo and Sapporo choose to fly.

This makes complete sense because the current Hokkaido Shinkansen route terminates at Hakodate and requires another 3.5 hour train ride from there to Sapporo, making it an 8-hour rail trip from Tokyo. Not only that, going this route by rail is frequently more expensive than flying.
